Creativity and Innovation: Robotics at Futuro Verde

Creativity and Innovation: Robotics at Futuro Verde

This 2020-21 has been atypical for our children, where we have had to migrate to a digital age that we were not used to. As part of the additional support for the boys, we implemented the robotics course.

This discipline gives us an early approach to the STEAM environment in which the jobs of the future are found, allowing students to develop soft skills such as programming, design, teamwork, among others.

An important point in this program is the approach to steam careers (programming, Electrical Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Product Design Engineer). This allows the student before choosing their future career, to have a glimpse of the skills necessary to perform in these careers and not go blind in their choice.

Our robotics program seeks to open all these spaces, to bring children closer to the 4.0 industrial revolution that is diversifying the work spaces of the future.

Model United Nations Club: A year full of surprises!

Model United Nations Club: A year full of surprises!

Club Modelo de Naciones Unidas en Futuro Verde

As many of you have already heard, the year 2020 marks the beginning of our new Model United Nations Club as one of our extracurricular activities. We have already successfully completed the process of admitting students to the club and are very excited to announce the various activities we are organizing, as well as the conferences we will be participating in throughout the school year.

Here are some important dates regarding the Model U.N. Club:

  • During the months of April and May we will be collaborating with SEK International School in San Jose with the goal of having informative training sessions for our MUN Club students.
  • We will collaborate with La Paz Community School, a school in the Guanacaste area to conduct training sessions.
  • On August 29th and 30th, we will be attending the first inter-school conference at the East MUN Conference, where students from Model U.N. clubs across the country are participating.
  • On September 25th, 26th and 27th we will be attending the national CRIMUN conference in San Jose.
  • Our last event will be participating and collaborating with the Model United Nations Club at United World Colleges (UWC).

It is very inspiring that our participating students can be part of this great opportunity. Not only will they develop skills throughout the learning process such as formal writing skills, public speaking, and debate, among others, but they will also be able to get to know new places and make new friends.

Coming Soon: Open Mic Nights!

Coming Soon: Open Mic Nights!

Futuro Verde has always valued learning from varied, practical, real-life experiences more than only learning from books. This is amply reflected in the number of innovative teaching and learning strategies used by all the teachers in the school as well as the extra-curricular after school clubs offered for students. We also believe that exposure to culture is one of the best lessons we can give our students.

To bring this philosophy further to life, we have undertaken a new endeavour – to host Open Mic nights on a regular basis! So many of our students are highly creative and talented. These Open Mic nights would be the perfect avenue for them to showcase their talents, and to hone them. Students are welcome to perform singing songs, slam poetry, performance poetry instrumental performances, stand-up comedy, Karaoke – the possibilities are endless!

In anticipation of this exciting event, we are pleased to announce the commencement of a new club – the Slam Poetry Club, held every Tuesday from 3:15-4:15, starting from 5th March. Please email vidhi@futuro-verde.org for more details.

To end, I’ll borrow the famous lines from Dead Poet’s Society, “ We don’t read and write poetry because it’s cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.”

Our first Open Mic night will be held in at the end of March. Start preparing your pieces, and keep watching this space for more updates!

When Do We Get our Multi-use Sports Court?

When Do We Get our Multi-use Sports Court?

sports, ib school, international education

For over a year now Futuro Verde students, staff, parents and our greater school community have worked together to raise the funds needed for a multi-use sports court for the school. With our efforts thus far we have raised over $5,000. The total cost of the court is estimated at $40,000, which would include the court base and roof.  Our board president, Rico Reolon, has been working hard to secure an external donor willing to support the funding needed for our court and just this last month the good news came in- a Swiss donor has committed to $20,000 toward our sports facilities!

We held a surprise announcement with our staff and students and filmed the moment to share with our social media community and as a thank you to our donor. Students and staff celebrated in full- overjoyed to have achieved such impressive progress on this important goal for our school community! It is never lost on our school community that we have and continue to thrive thanks to the support of generous donations just like our current Swiss donors and we are tremendously grateful for this ongoing support.

Phase one of construction for the sports court will begin as soon as possible. This phase will complete the court base and will boast a purpose-built facility designed for:

New sports achievements!

New sports achievements!

This beginning of the year we have been very busy training and participating in a wide variety of sports. Our school has been well represented in all the sports where our athletes have competed, with some of the sport-specific achievements from previous years continuing on as successes again this year. This year Futuro Verde had two students qualify on to nationals in cross country. In swimming, we are also having a lot of success with 14 athletes qualifying for nationals. In these two sports, we have maintained our competitive level and have demonstrated that, despite the many challenges, with work and discipline, important things can be achieved. However, these have not been all our achievements so far. For the first time in the history of Futuro Verde, and thanks to the help of Professor Oscar Leal Méndez, we have formed a chess team that has proudly and prominently represented our institution in regional and interregional events. Also, new this year, we have formed three basketball teams which are still in the training stage and will soon be ready to compete.

But we’re only halfway through the year. In the coming months we will be organizing different sports events that will offer a number of opportunities for recreation and physical activity. These include a community chess tournament, a cross-country field race and different clubs to be offered after school. Stay tuned and informed and do not miss any of these amazing opportunities.
