Foundations in Costa Rica are the safest legal entity for non-for-profit organizations, as their purpose cannot be changed by any means after the registration. Donations can only be used for the purpose defined in the Constitution.
Especially in the United States, foundations have earned a very negative image because of several frauds in the United States and in other Latin American countries. Thanks to the strict Costa Rican Foundation Law this is not possible here.
The foundation registration in the National Register was finished in August 2008. From that moment on, the foundation has been an acknowledged institution in Costa Rica and after three years (in August 2011) it may receive tax-deductable donations. In the meantime, we are accepting tax-deductable donations via the XXX Foundation based in the United States.
