Ekaterina Barquero Chaves

Primary School teacher

All basic subjects

.. is a licensed Psychologist with Honors Degree from the University Iberoamèrica, San Josè; Audience year University of Nancy, France. She also posesses the “Diplôme des Etudes de la Langue Française du Second Degré” from the same university. In addition, Ekaterina studied at the Conservatorio de Castella, the only artistic college of Costa Rica, where she achieved a degree in Drama & Arts.

Ekaterina started her teaching career in 2003, where she taught French for the Primary and Secondary level of Saint Basilio College, Escazù. In 2007, she was the main teacher and in charge of the basic subjects for the primary grades of the Montessori School Cabuya. Her excellent work there convinced the parents of those kids to offer her the position of the main teacher of the primary school of the “Escuela Futuro Verde”.

She wants to use her experiences in Psychlogy, Education and Arts to implement personalized teaching, where the strengths and weaknesses of each child determines the methods of learning. In this way, she wants to discover, together with the child, how to conduct a less difficult and entertaining way of learning.

In the “Escuela Futuro Verde Project” Ekaterina will contribute her knowledge to develop a program convenient for facilitating learning and forming personalities.

Development Curiculum

… is a multicultural educator with much experience and formal training in the field of education. She earned a Master's Degree with Honors in International Training and Education and a graduate-level Secondary English Language Teaching Certificate from The American University in Washington, DC. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors in American Studies from the University of Maryland, College Park.

While attending graduate school she was awarded the Myra Sadker Student Equity Award and began working with Cesar Chavez Public Charter High School. Here she helped found a highly successful public school in an impoverished neighborhood in Washington, DC. She was formally trained by the Public Education and Business Coalition to work as a Literacy Coach, or teacher trainer. Her roles at Cesar Chavez Public Charter School included curriculum design and implementation, training teachers and leading workshops on positive methods of class management, and grant and proposal writing. She also volunteered with the American Field Service (AFS) as the Teacher Coordinator for the Washington DC area. She was selected to present at a global conference for the National Staff Curriculum Development Council in Denver, Colorado, to share with educators from around the world her work and experience.

Kerri has traveled around the world and has taught in Thailand, Vietnam and the United States. She co-founded Proyecto Montezuma, an Educational and Environmental Volunteer Adventure Program to bring qualified and eager teachers and professionals to the Montezuma area, and is eager to better the quality of education for all students living here. Now, she is eager and ready to combine her formal training and experience with the children of the Nicoya Peninsula and will provide her wide knowledge to the Escuela Futuro Verde to build up its teaching program and to start fundraising. She also teaches English for Primary school kids.

Jenny F. Bassichis

Pre-School Teacher

... has a Bachelor of Arts’ degree in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Sociology from the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, RI. Jenny has a wide spectrum of teaching and childcare experience, for she has worked in various capacities and on many diverse projects.

She interned at the Royal Free Hospital, London, England, for the Children’s Psychiatric Department. Then, she performed another internship at Bradley Special Needs School, Portsmouth, RI, where she performed one-on-one student tutoring and mentoring. After these “heavy duty experiences” she broadened her professional experience by working in the Music & Film Industry; however, she continued to work with children in her spare time and holidays. For example, she taught at The Village Preschool Center in New York; taught at an independent Montessori Preschool Summer Program; volunteered in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at the Kids at Lake Creation teaching local children Basic English skills; and in Los Angeles, CA as a Childcare Worker.

Jenny moved to Sta. Teresa in April and is extremely excited to re-focus her career on working with children and having her own class. She will develop creative projects and lesson plans for the Prep School children and is highly motivated to be involved in the Escuela Futuro Verde Project. She will be supervised by Ekaterina Barquero with the basic Pre-school curriculum and the MEP standards and mandates.

 

Milly Anz

“Creative Hour”

German as mother language

... studied six years “social pedagogics” at the University of Hamburg/Germany and has a Social Work Degree”. She has lived in the southern Peninsula Nicoya for 15 years, she has two sons (12 and 15 years old). Milly had the Kindergarten “los Monitos” in Montezuma, and many of the kids now attending classes grew with her. At Escuela Futuro Verde, she gives the “Hora Creativa” with different handicraft projects for kids to support the practical skills of the kids.  

She also teaches German as mother language.

Donatella Luxardo

Italian as mother language

… has been involucrated in education nearly her entire life. From 1974 – 1984 she has been Teacher for Physical Education at public schools in Milàn, Italy. Meanwhile she attended courses in Philosophy, Pedagogics and Psychology at the University of Milàn, and finished her studies of Graphic Design and Photograohy at the Steiner Humanitary Institute, Milàn. From 1984 to 1993 she worked as a Graphic Designer and columnist for interior design & furniture magazines, also in Italy.

After moving to Costa Rica in 1994, she was a voluntary teacher at the Public Montezuma Primary School for subjects like plastic Arts, Physical Education and Swimming as well as a `special needs` teacher for the basic subjects until 2005. Since 1999 until now, 2008, she is dedicated to the early education of kids - descendents from different countries of the world and mainly born already in Costa Rica, in her own little Kindergarten “Mundolindo” (“Beautifulworld”), where she developed her own method to offer an eclectic, cosmopolitan and liberal formation. The name of her Kindergarten reflects her knowledge of the world with 30 countries visited on 4 continents. She speaks Italian, Spanish, English and French. Donatella knowns the majority of the Montezuma kids and adolescents since they were born.

At Escuela Futuro Verde she teaches Italian as a mother language.

“Nova”,  Rev. Grace Anna Johnson

Philosophy

… has a BA and Masters in “Metaphysics” and is currently working on her Doctorate of Divinity and Ph.D in “Holistic Life Coaching”. A multi-cultural product of Carribean and American parents, Nova has seen many places – she traveled Asia and other parts of the world, in her 20 year spiritual journey. She speaks German, Italian, English and Spanish.  She has a 2 children, aged 2 and 16.

Nova wants to make basic life ethics and spiritual concepts available to the kids, without being bound to a religion.  Integrated chapters of her course “holistic concepts for kids” are meditation skills, intuitive skills and trust in their own higher conscious-ness. Her goal is to assist each student in obtaining valuable skills necessary to problem resolution today, to understand how popular culture influences the masses' sense of identity and thus gain skills necessary to distinguish between mass cultural concepts and their own personal concepts of "what is truly important" and the courage to be themselves, and to support students healthy tolerance levels by understanding what is true of all Religions.

Judith Hemstreit

Music/ Singing lesson


... has years of experience in performing as a singer/guitarist. She has written, performed and recorded songs alone and with other musicians in various ways and styles.

In her home country Austria she started working with disabled and old people, then spent 2 years at university, studying Philosophy, Russian and Literature - in the end everything was taken over by music and arts,  producing CDs and paintings, as well as poems and texts, being part of smaller and bigger concerts and other performances, such as body-painting-dance, small theatre and music videos. Her main instrument is her voice, but she plays and performs with the guitar when on her own and has experience with percussion as well.

Arriving in Cabuya about 2 years ago, she started to work with children, as she has one daughter herself, she has worked at the Kinder “Mundo Lindo” as assistant.

In the music lessons at Escuela Futuro Verde she provides one hour with songs from allover the world for kids and the children will enjoy the shared experience which singing together brings along. Judith will put together what she knows about music and what she has learned about children.

Caitie Dougherty

Art Class

… Caitie comes to Montezuma from Baltimore, Maryland as a volunteer with Proyecto Montezuma to teach at La Escuela Futuro Verde.  She attended the University of Maryland in College Park, located near Washington, DC. At this university she studied Italian and majored in Art History and Archeology. She graduated in 2006 with a concentration in Medieval Art. In the fall of 2007, she taught at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.  Here she taught school groups of all ages educational and artistic activities focused on the history of Baltimore City.

She will be working at La Escuela Futuro Verde for three month` as the teacher for Arts. She looks forward to incorporating the surrounding environments and wealth of natural beauty into experiences of various art forms. After her work in Montezuma, she plans to pursue an advanced degree in Bilingual Education.

Karen Mc Cabe

Dance Instructor

... is a natural born athlete and dancer, from the earliest years involved with track, gymnastics and performance team dancing. Later, graduating with art and graphics in mind she worked 11 years designing and travelling around Asia. During that time she spent 9 years on and off professionally dancing with her fire-dance group Pyrosutra, performing for corporate, city and private events.

She and her husband moved to Montezuma nearly four years ago, thinking it an ideal place to raise children. Her daughter is now 2 years old. Karen is looking forward to teaching creative dance to the children at Escuela Futuro Verde and hopes to inspire them and help create confidence.
