What is it that motivates people to engage in environmental activism

What is it that motivates people to engage in environmental activism

professinal development, BHS, pd, capacitación, desarrollo profesional, Dr Ken Winograd

With this question, the 2018 BHS Conference was off to another great start.  This unique annual professional development opportunity for educators, parents, and community members is a one of a kind experience that takes place in the beautiful jungle environment of the Costa Rican Nicoya Peninsula. Beginning with the first keynote presentation by Dr. Ken Winograd, a retired professor from Oregon State University, a theme of resilience in the face of global environmental and political issues, and hope achieved through activism, was threaded throughout the conference sessions. Teachers, international visitors, parents, and local environmental activists presented a wide variety of sessions on Bilingual, Holistic and Sustainable educational practices that offer compelling ideas that can be applied in the classroom, in the community, and in one’s personal life.

The 2018 BHS Conference included 25 presentations held over two days, with two to three sessions offered concurrently at a time. Ten of the presentations focused on sustainability (e.g., analyzing river water, beach cleanups, solving real world problems in the classroom, permaculture, global education, child nutrition, living a balanced life, sustaining FV goals over the next 50 years in the Cóbano area); four addressed bilingual education (e.g., benefits of being bilingual, a comparative language class, bilingual poetry, creating a library of bilingual literature); in the “holistic” category, two sessions were on Mindfulness with one of these sessions being presented by our other special guest, Melinda Winograd; three sessions involved music (e.g., ukulele workshop, music and poetry, integration of music in the curriculum); one session focused on helping teachers with organizing student data using a digital register and another session introduced teachers  to alternative summative evaluations that utilized games and activities to reduce test anxiety and to better assess what students really know.

The talents of the FV community were also on display during the conference. Musical interludes presented by FV teachers, parents, and students added a relaxing backdrop to each of the meriendas/snacks and almuerzos/lunches in the comodor/dining area. When asked in the final evaluation what aspect of the conference they considered most useful, informative, and/or interesting, participants responded:

“Considero que la variedad de temas y el alto intelectual de las ponencias.”

“De todos aprendí algo nuevo.”

“Todo–La comida, la música. El hecho de compartir el conocimiento con los demás.”

“Todas las conferencias a las que asistí me aportaron algo que puedo aplicar en mi trabajo diario.”

Reflecting back on the question that opens this article, “significant time in nature” is what Dr. Winograd shared with us that researchers found when studying what motivates people to engage in environmental activism. “And you live that everyday here at Futuro-Verde and provide that for your students,” he told the BHS Conference attendees. This, along with curricular integration, collaborative work, problem solving together, the teaching of critical thinking, projects that are place-based, and the importance of being “connected” are examples of how the Futuro-Verde administration, teachers, and staff have made this school an optimal space for helping students develop resilience in the face of adversity. The 2018 BHS Conference was an important “space” for bringing together FV teachers and administrators with local activists and educators from points as far away as states in the U.S., Alaska and New Mexico, to strengthen connections and exchange ideas.

We want to thank Dr. Winograd and all the other presenters who made this year’s conference such a meaningful experience. As we look forward to BHS 2019, planning is already in place to follow through on participant suggestions for our 5th annual conference, such as offering only two concurrent sessions at a time so that participants can attend more of the presentations, making the conference affordable to local community members and educators, and planning an extracurricular activity to close the conference. See you next year!

4th Annual International BHS Conference

4th Annual International BHS Conference

Centro Educativo Futuro Verde is very fortunate to have two outstanding educators be the Keynote speakers for this year’s 4th Annual International Conference on Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable Education: Ken Winograd and Melinda Winograd.

Dr. Ken Winograd has experience teaching every elementary grade, Kindergarten-5th grade, in the United States, including a non-graded primary class. He also has international teaching and consulting experience in Japan, Norway, Vietnam, and Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica, he studied the literacy practices in Costa Rican elementary schools. Dr. Winograd has taught courses and published academic articles and books that address the emotional dimensions of teaching, critical literacy, and enhancing children’s resilience in a world of environmental crises. This last focus of Dr. Winograd’s work will have special interest for Futuro Verde parents because he has researched ways in which teachers and parents can help respond to their children’s possible fears and emotions as they try to process the news they hear about current global environmental crises with climate change. Dr. Winograd has recently retired from OSU but has kept active with part-time teaching in the OSU Honors College and in political action groups focusing on environmental issues.

Melinda Winograd has been a teacher in education for 42 years and is now teaching kindergarten. In the past 5 years, she has been involved in taking coursework and learning about teaching mindfulness to students and educators. Ms. Winograd has taught mindfulness practices to her kindergarten students and for professional development opportunities with teachers K-12. She is currently in a Mindfulness course about non-violent communication based on Marshall Rosenberg’s work. She says that it has already had an impact on her interactions with students and that it is amazing how the kindergarten students are using the practices as well. Ms. Winograd’s work will be of interest to not just Futuro Verde teachers, but also Futuro Verde parents because mindfulness practices have been shown to have a positive impact on students’ emotional, social, and academic progress in school.

We are very excited, and we are looking forward to, all that we can learn from Dr. Ken Winograd and Ms. Melinda Winograd’s experiences with and expertise in these important educational issues.

The Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable International Conference 2017

The Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable International Conference 2017

Centro Educativo Futuro Verde is hosting the 3rd Annual Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable International Conference June 29-30, 2017. We are very excited that this conference, focusing on these three important educational areas, is in its third year and going strong.

It is common knowledge that, “The quality of an educational system depends on the quality of its teachers (UNESCO 2013) and continuing professional development is key to sustaining and enhancing teacher quality (Borg 2015). As a school-based conference that predominantly highlights the work of practicing teachers in a bilingual school, this conference offers a meaningful teacher professional development experience in which the knowledgeable, committed and caring Futuro Verde teachers share and learn from each other knowledge and strategies that have contributed to their success as teachers.

Along with the teacher presentations, the BHS Conference 2017 will also have an entire day that focuses upon Sustainability that will include such presentations as, “Life Lessons of an Ocean Photographer Dedicated to Conservation” and “‘Todos somos agua’ (We  Are All Water): Student Scientists Exploring the Rivers.”

We are very excited that this year’s keynote addresses will be presented by an exemplary classroom teacher, Shahnaz Sahnow.  As a classroom practitioner, adjunct instructor at Oregon State University, and Fulbright Scholar, Ms. Sahnow brings current classroom and district wide experience combined with research based knowledge. Ms. Sahnow has taken on leadership roles in the development of bilingual programs in her school district in Oregon, as well as leadership in implementing the use of authentic assessments for all students. Her keynote presentations will be of interest to not just the Futuro Verde teachers, but to parents and community members as well

As with the previous two BHS conferences, this year’s conference will also include cultural presentations by local groups. These presentations go beyond entertainment to sharing information about cultural traditions.

The Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainability International Conference is open to everyone. We encourage parents and community members to attend. We know that this year’s BHS Conference will provide our Futuro Verde students and community with valuable information. We look forward to seeing you at the conference!

BHS- World Class Learning at Your Doorstep

BHS- World Class Learning at Your Doorstep

parents, learn, professional develop, learning, teachers, bilingual

Living and working in the middle of the jungle of Costa Rica, next to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, is an invaluable gift that we are fortunate to enjoy each and every day here at Futuro Verde. However, living in such a far flung location can mean that at times we can feel isolated from the rest of the world. For this reason, every year we open our school to the community, to parents and to educators across Costa Rica and the world during our International Conference on Bilingual, Holistic and Sustainable Education. We share our school, our model and the knowledge of our teachers with other educators who join us for two days of fun-filled and meaningful professional and personal development.

This year’s BHS conference is our 3rd Annual event and it promises to be more unique than ever. Day 1 on June 29th of the conference will focus entirely on sustainability, with interactive sessions, a Feria Verde and a one of a kind Trashion fashion show!  Day 2 on June 30th will feature our keynote speaker, Shahnaz Sahnow, and a full day of sessions focused on bilingual and holistic education.

We would love to see more parents attending our BHS conference this year! As parents strive to best support their children’s learning at home, they are well served to more deeply understand the underpinnings and philosophy of our unique style of education as well as have the opportunity to strengthen their understanding of how to best work with their children at home. If you haven’t signed up yet, spots still remain! Follow the directions at the link below and sign-up today for this unique and beneficial opportunity at BHS 2017!

Application to offer the IB* Diploma – an update

Application to offer the IB* Diploma – an update

IB learning

In a little over two months, we reach one of the most important parts of our application for authorization to offer the IB* Diploma Program at Futuro Verde. Two inspectors from IB* will come on May 29th and 30th to conduct a verification visit. They will inspect the school, the infrastructure and resources, and interview administration, teachers, board members, parents, and students. The outcome of this visit will be that our application is accepted, denied or pending with “matters to be addressed”. Obviously, everyone is working hard to make sure that we are successful and are approved to start offering IB* classes in 2018 in 11th grade.

Over the next two months our preparation will include:

  • Monthly information events for parents.
  • Information meetings for students in 8th, 9th and 10th grades.
  • Teachers will continue to attend IB* workshops.
  • Necessary resources will be purchased or built into the budget for purchase in the future.

During the vacation and first few weeks of school there were some large-scale building projects. These projects benefit all students in the school, but are also vital to ensure that our application and future students stand the best chance of success. The art room has been enlarged and renovated, there is now a designated music room with plans in place to develop it further, the science lab has been completed, and the new preschool classrooms have made space for a multi-media lab and library.

With so much work done already, it is really important that we keep momentum, push forward, and all play a role, preparing as best we can for a successful verification visit and authorization.

*Centro Educativo Futuro Verde is a candidate school* for the Diploma Programme.  This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School.  These are schools that share a common philosophy- a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Centro Educativo Futuro Verde believes is important for our students.Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme or the Career-related Programme (CP).  Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit http://www.ibo.org
