Carta #14: Cambios en Prepa y Primaria para el 2do semestre | Letter #14: Prepa and Primary changes for 2nd semester

Estimados padres y profesores,

Compartimos algunos cambios en el personal pedagógico y posiciones de Prepa (Pk3-Kinder) y Upper Primary (4to-5to):

1) La Prof. Stephanie Núñez estará con Futuro Verde hasta diciembre 15, ya que ha optado por una nueva oportunidad de trabajo. Nos apena su partida, pero agradecemos enormemente la dedicación y el cariño entregado a Futuro verde en todos estos años. Le deseamos lo mejor en esta nueva etapa de su vida profesional..

2) La Prof. Katherine Barrantes, que actualmente sustituye a la Prof. Anya Forrestell durante su incapacidad médica, retornará a su posición en Preescolar como profesora crew de Kinder. La Prof. Katherine estudió educación preescolar y estará completando su bachillerato este diciembre en la Universidad Hispanoamericana. Estamos agradecidos por la excelente labor de Prof. Katherine en Upper Primary. ¡Katherine – estamos emocionados de que continúes tus contribuciones en nuestro equipo!

3) Como anticipamos en un correo anterior, la Prof. Anya Forrestell volverá a su puesto como maestra de Upper Primary (4to-5to) de ciencias y matemáticas. El Prof. Roberto Quirós continuará enseñando matemáticas de Lower Secondary (6to-9no), y la nueva Prof. Daniela Sandí tomará las riendas del programa IB de Upper Secondary (10mo – 12vo). Esta reestructuración mejorará notablemente nuestro programa de matemáticas IB.

4) La Prof. Jennifer McLellan, nuestra autora y profesora que tiene 5 años en Futuro Verde, será la nueva coordinadora del ciclo Preescolar (pk3, pk4. kinder). Prof. Jenn esta super preparada – estudió su BA en la University of Northern British Columbia – Canada, y su MA en Moreland University, Washington DC, USA.

¡Estamos súper entusiasmado con las ideas que ha traído Prof. Jennifer para el excelente ciclo de Preescolar que ya tenemos! Más naturaleza y más aprendizaje, haciendo más juego, más literacia, y más socialización.

Como parte de la expansión de nuestro programa de desarrollo profesional, apoyaremos el proyecto de Preescolar enviando en febrero a Prof. Jennifer a Lima – Perú, a un taller de Primary Years Program, del Bachillerato Internacional. ¡Continuamos fortaleciendo a Futuro Verde, invirtiendo en nuestros profesores!

Miramos al próximo semestre con optimismo y con estabilidad pedagógica, con una notable mejora en nuestra realidad económica, éxito en recaudaciones y donaciones, mejoras notables en nuestra planta física y aulas, e inversiones históricas en material de ciencias, tecnología educativa y libros de texto. ¡Seguimos fortaleciéndonos!

Dear parents and teachers,

We share some changes in the teaching staff of Prepa (Pk3-Kinder) and Upper Primary (4th-6th):

1) Prof. Stephanie Núñez will be with Futuro Verde until December 15, as she has opted for a new job opportunity. We are sorry to see her go, but we are very grateful for her dedication and love for Futuro Verde during all these years, and we wish her the best in this new stage of her professional life.

2) Prof. Katherine Barrantes, who replaced Prof. Anya Forrestell during her medical disability, will return to her position at Prepa. Prof. Katherine studied preschool education and is completing her university degree this December at the Universidad Hispanoamericana. We are grateful for the excellent work of Prof. Katherine at Upper Primary. Katherine – we are excited for you to continue your contributions!

3) As we anticipated in a previous email, Prof. Anya Forrestell will return to her position as Upper Primary (4th-5th) science and mathematics teacher. Prof. Roberto Quirós will continue teaching Lower Secondary mathematics (6th-9th), and the new Prof. Daniela Sandi will take the reins of the Upper Secondary IB program (10th-12th). This restructuring will significantly improve our IB mathematics program.

4) Prof. Jennifer McLellan, our author and teacher who has been at Futuro Verde for several years, will be the new coordinator of the Preschool cycle (pk3, pk4. kindergarten). Prof. Jennifer is highly qualified having obtained her BA at the University of Northern British Columbia – Canada, and her MA at Moreland University, Washington DC, USA.

We are super excited about the ideas that Prof. Jennifer has brought for the excellent Preschool cycle that we already have! More nature, more learning by doing, more playing, more literacy, and more socialization.

As part of the expansion of our professional development program, we will support the Preschool project by sending Prof. Jennifer to Lima, Peru in February to a Primary Years Program workshop of the International Baccalaureate. We continue to strengthen Futuro Verde, investing in our teachers!

We look to the next semester with optimism and with pedagogical stability, with a notable improvement in our economic reality, success in fundraising and donations, notable improvements in our physical plant and classrooms, and historic investments in science and technology materials, multimedia and textbooks. We continue to get stronger!

Carta #13: Reorganización de nuestro programa de Matemáticas | Letter #13: Reorganization of our Math program

Dear Futuro Verde Parents and Faculty,

I want to share with all the decisions we’ve made regarding the reorganization and staffing of the math program. beginning in Semester 2 (next semester). The changes we hope will strengthen the learning experience, to better educate our children, and to result in better learning outcomes.

1) We’ve purchased and are in the process of implementing IB aligned math textbooks for all students in grades 1-12th. The textbooks will provide highly needed structure and sequence to our math program across the entire primary to secondary sequence.

2) We will have three core specialist math teachers, one teaching 4-6th, another 7-9th and 3rd 10-12th in the core UP, LS and IBDP sequence.

The specialist math teachers team will be: Anya Forrestell – UP, Roberto Quiros – LS and our new secondary math teacher Daniela Sandi US-IBDP.

Specialist math teachers, as a vast body of research suggests, should significantly improve our program.

3) Math will be taught bilingually, but the textbooks are in English. Students may choose to take assessments in whichever language they prefer.

4) All math classrooms have been equipped with TV multimedia/internet, approved calculators and student one to one laptops. Geogebra (math modeling) and Khan Academy (lesson videos) apps will be installed in all student laptops so students may learn online in support of the school based program.

We will increase the use of math apps to enrich and enhance math learning.

5) Standard assessment policy will include monthly unit exams and 2-3 quizzes starting in 5th grade. Assignments and assessment instruments will all be derived from the textbook and will all be IB aligned. This follows over three decades of educational research supporting this kind of assessment structure for improved learning in math.

6) The goals of the FV math program will be as follows:

a) That students embrace and love math as a way of understanding and making sense of the world. That students use math to make informed decisions and use mathematical thinking in all aspects of their life.

b) That students obtain average IB Diploma scores of 4.5 – 5 in the IB Diploma Math Applications course, and equivalent scores in high quality standardized tests in 6th and 9th grade.

We hope these changes will ensure that our students are better prepared for college, and be able to be part of 21st century life, where math will play an increasingly important role in the lives of all.

Estimados padres y profesores de Futuro Verde,

Quiero compartir con todos las decisiones que hemos tomado con respecto a la reorganización y la dotación de personal del programa de matemáticas a partir del semestre 2 (próximo semestre).

Los cambios que esperamos fortalecerán la experiencia de aprendizaje, educarán mejor a nuestros hijos y darán mejores resultados de aprendizaje.

1) Hemos comprado y estamos en el proceso de implementar libros de texto de matemáticas alineados con el IB para todos los estudiantes en los grados 1 al 12. Los libros de texto proporcionarán una estructura y secuencia muy necesarias para nuestro programa de matemáticas en toda la secuencia de primaria a secundaria.

2) Tendremos tres maestros básicos especialistas en matemáticas, uno que enseñará de 4.º a 6.º, otro de 7.º a 9.º y un tercero de 10.º a 12.º en las secuencias básicas de UP, LS e IBDP.

El equipo de profesores especialistas en matemáticas estará formado por: Anya Forrestell – UP, Roberto Quirós – LS y nuestra nueva profesora de matemáticas de secundaria Daniela Sandi US-IBDP.

Los profesores especialistas en matemáticas, como sugiere una gran cantidad de investigaciones, deberían mejorar significativamente nuestro programa.

3) Las matemáticas se enseñarán de forma bilingüe, pero los libros de texto están en inglés. Los estudiantes pueden optar por realizar evaluaciones en el idioma que prefieran.

4) Todas las aulas de matemáticas han sido equipadas con TV multimedia/Internet, calculadoras aprobadas y computadoras portátiles individuales para los estudiantes. Las aplicaciones Geogebra (modelado matemático) y Khan Academy (videos de lecciones) se instalarán en todas las computadoras portátiles de los estudiantes para que puedan aprender en línea en apoyo del programa escolar.

Aumentaremos el uso de aplicaciones matemáticas para enriquecer y mejorar el aprendizaje de las matemáticas.

5) La política de evaluación estándar incluirá exámenes unitarios mensuales y 2 o 3 cuestionarios a partir del quinto grado. Todas las tareas y los instrumentos de evaluación se derivarán del libro de texto y estarán alineados con el IB. Esto es consecuencia de más de tres décadas de investigación educativa que respalda este tipo de estructura de evaluación para mejorar el aprendizaje en matemáticas.

6) Los objetivos del programa de matemáticas FV serán los siguientes:

a) Que los estudiantes abracen y amen las matemáticas como una forma de comprender y dar sentido al mundo. Que los estudiantes utilicen las matemáticas para tomar decisiones informadas y utilizar el pensamiento matemático en todos los aspectos de su vida.

b) Que los estudiantes obtengan puntuaciones promedio del Diploma IB de 4,5 a 5 en el curso de Aplicaciones de Matemáticas del Diploma IB y puntuaciones equivalentes en pruebas estandarizadas de alta calidad en 6.º y 9.º grado.

Esperamos que estos cambios garanticen que nuestros estudiantes estén mejor preparados para la universidad y puedan ser parte de la vida del siglo XXI, donde las matemáticas desempeñarán un papel cada vez más importante en las vidas de todos.

Carta #12: Reclutamiento exitoso de Profesora de Matemáticas para Secundaria – Daniela Sandi Castella | Letter #12: Successful High School Math Teacher Recruitment – Daniela Sandi Castella

Estimada Padres y Profesores de Futuro Verde,

Me alegra anunciar que hemos reclutado con éxito a la Profesora Daniela Sandi Castella como profesora de matemáticas de secundaria. La Profesora Sandi viene con una licenciatura del programa de enseñanza de matemática de la universidad #1 de Costa Rica y Centro America, la UCR.

La candidata fue nuestra finalista en un proceso que involucró 23 candidatos iniciales, de los cuales 9 fueron entrevistados, y 3 resultaron finalistas de segunda entrevista, y 2 fueron invitados a dar clases modelo.. Este proceso incluyó la participación e insumos de 3 profesores de secundaria, la Coordinadora Académica, Karol Madrigal y el Dr Gabriel. La profesora impartió 3 clases modelos a 10mo, 11vo y 12vo. Los grupos estudiantiles compartieron sus reflexiones muy positivas sobre las clases con el Dr. Gabriel. Fue un proceso nuevo, multidimensional colaborativo y eficiente.

Confiamos que la Profesora Sandin, junto con el resto del equipo de matemáticas, el Prof Roberto Quiros y la Prof. Anya Forestell, nos ayudarán a fortalecer nuestro programa de matemáticas del Bachillerato Internacional.

Dear Parents and Teachers of Futuro Verde,

I am happy to announce that we have successfully recruited Professor Daniela Sandi Castella as a high school mathematics teacher. Professor Sandi comes with a bachelor’s degree from the mathematics teaching program at the #1 university in Costa Rica, UCR.

The candidate was our finalist in a process that involved 23 initial candidates, of which 9 were interviewed, and 3 were finalists in the second interview, and 2 were invited to teach model classes. This process included the participation and input of 3 professors from secondary school, the Academic Coordinator, Karol Madrigal and Dr Gabriel. The teacher taught 3 model classes to 10th, 11th and 12th grade. Student groups shared their very positive reflections on classes with Dr. Gabriel. It was a new, multidimensional, collaborative and efficient process.

We are confident that Professor Sandin, along with the rest of the mathematics team, Prof. Roberto Quiros and Prof. Anya Forestell, will help us strengthen our International Baccalaureate mathematics program.

Summary of the Ordinary & Extraordinary Assembly

Dear families,

Summary of the Ordinary & Extraordinary Assembly

The extraordinary assembly meeting took place this past Tuesday, October 17th 2023 at 3 pm and the following items were presented:

1. Welcome – Jennifer Middleton (President)

Jennifer welcomed families to the assembly meeting and thanked them for their continued support. She explained the purpose of the assembly and went over general logistics.

2. Fiscal Report – Jennifer Middleton (President)

Jennifer reported that all members continue to be very committed to their roles and sometimes even beyond their roles, always working for the welfare of the school. The board meets twice a month to discuss current happenings at the school, updates from the director, ongoing challenges, and future planning and decision making.

There will be two board meetings (one per semester) that will be open to the entire association. More information about these meetings, including the dates and time will be announced at a later date.

In the first couple months of school many board meetings were focused on the 2023-2024 budget and it was approved.

Several subcommittees were created in order to progress on various initiatives in smaller working groups. These subcommittees include strategic planning, by-laws, rebranding, and fundraising.

As always, not only do they remain active on these occasions, but they maintain active communication on a daily basis through a WhatsApp chat to discuss daily/weekly occurrences.

3. Financial Report for the 22-23 & 23-24 school years

Finance manager, Tania Rodriguez, presented the financial status for conclusion of the 2022-2023 school year. She then presented the approved budget for the 2023-2024 school year and the financial goals of the institution.

4. Fundraising Committee

Two representatives of the Fundraising Committee, Yindra Liska and Anjy Cameron, spoke about the purpose of the fundraising committee and how more parents can get involved. They clarified that the committee is led and organized by parents and not by the school.

5. Voting Results – Board of Directors

Elections were held for 5 positions on the Board. These positions were President, Vice-president, Treasurer, Member at large 2, and Member at large 3. There were 64 members of the association present to vote and 64 total votes counted for each position.

The results were as follows:

President: Jennifer Middleton (63 votes, 1 blank)
Vice-President: Soledad Yacob (61 votes, 2 blank, 1 null)
Treasurer: Matthew Heywood (64 votes)
Member at large 2: Jeffe Tanghe (44 votes) vs. Valentina Massaferro (20 votes)
Member at large 3: Cristina Aguinagalde (63 votes, 1 blank)

Congratulations to the new members of the Board of Directors!

A huge thank you to Sonya Danchik and Georges Lefebvre for their many years of service on the Board! They will be missed!

The new term will begin on November 1st, 2023 and will end on October 31st, 2026

Resumen de la Asamblea Ordinaria y Extraordinaria

La reunión de la asamblea extraordinaria tuvo lugar el pasado martes 17 de octubre de 2023 a las 15:00 horas y en ella se presentaron los siguientes puntos:

1. Bienvenida – Jennifer Middleton (Presidenta)

Jennifer dio la bienvenida a las familias a la reunión de la asamblea y les agradeció su continuo apoyo. Explicó el propósito de la asamblea y repasó la logística general.

2. Reporte Fiscal – Jennifer Middleton (Presidenta)

Jennifer informó que todos los miembros continúan muy comprometidos con sus funciones y a veces incluso más allá de sus funciones, trabajando siempre por el bienestar de la escuela. La junta se reúne dos veces al mes para discutir los acontecimientos actuales en la escuela, las actualizaciones del director, los desafíos en curso, y la planificación futura y la toma de decisiones.

Habrá dos reuniones de la junta (una por semestre) que estarán abiertas a toda la asociación. Más adelante se anunciará más información sobre estas reuniones, incluidas las fechas y la hora.

En los dos primeros meses de clases, muchas reuniones de la junta se centraron en el presupuesto 2023-2024, que fue aprobado.

Se crearon varios subcomités para avanzar en varias iniciativas en grupos de trabajo más pequeños. Estos subcomités incluyen la planificación estratégica, los estatutos, la renovación de la marca y la recaudación de fondos.

Como siempre, no solo se mantienen activos en estas ocasiones, sino que mantienen una comunicación activa a diario a través de un chat de WhatsApp para comentar las incidencias diarias/semanales.

3. Informe financiero de los cursos 22-23 y 23-24

La gerente de finanzas, Tania Rodríguez, presentó el estado financiero para la conclusión del año escolar 2022-2023. Luego presentó el presupuesto aprobado para el año escolar 2023-2024 y las metas financieras de la institución.

4. Comité de Recaudación de Fondos

Dos representantes del Comité de Recaudación de Fondos, Yindra Liska y Anjy Cameron, hablaron sobre el propósito del comité de recaudación de fondos y cómo más padres pueden participar. Aclararon que el comité está dirigido y organizado por los padres y no por la escuela.

5. Resultados de la votación – Junta Directiva

Se realizaron elecciones para 5 puestos en la Junta Directiva. Estos cargos fueron Presidente, Vicepresidente, Tesorero, Miembro 2 y Miembro 3. Hubo 64 miembros de la asociación presentes para votar y 64 votos totales contados para cada posición.

Los resultados fueron los siguientes:

Presidenta: Jennifer Middleton (63 votos, 1 en blanco)
Vicepresidenta: Soledad Yacob (61 votos, 2 en blanco, 1 nulo)

Carta #11: Mejoras en nuestro parque infantil Prepa y más juegos al aire libre en la naturaleza | Letter #11: Improvements to our Prepa Playground and more Outdoor Nature Play

Dear FV Faculty and Parents,

This summer and first month of classes has seen significant improvements to our classrooms, green areas and play spaces. I will share with all weekly emails highlighting progress to celebrate and recognize our school as it moves forward in all areas of our operations! The first one was on budget last week. This second one is about facilities improvements that affect our littlest ones – the PREPA kids and their teachers!

We have taken a forgotten and essentially abandoned campus corner and revitalized and re conceptualized it as the new Prepa Playground. Large enough for 60 students running, swinging and climbing under our beautiful trees. An additional lower energy Prepa play space is coming soon, on top of the concrete box, where we have placed a tent for play tables (soon with wood blocks and play games), and on the concrete floor where floor play signs will be painted. This will allow all our prepa kids to play at high – middle – low energy levels in a shared playground.

More outdoor spaces for play in sun and rain will be a signature part of our Prepa cycle and the Futuro Verde learning experience. Our daily 30 min Forest Walk is a second new part of our “more outdoor, more nature play“ strategy, a move widely validated by research on learning and development in young children.

The new Prepa Playground is an excellent example of how Futuro Verde will move collaboratively forward: parents donated the core play machine ($3500 usd), FV moved and fixed the old swings and climbing machines, graveled and now tented the concrete space. Soon the concrete floor will be painted with an assortment of floor games chosen by our awesome Prepa teacher team!

Below is where we are at with our beautiful, developing PREPA playground! Thank you parents for the donation/fundraising of and the maintenance team for the efforts!

Together we can do great things for our children and our school!!

Estimados profesores y padres de FV:

Este verano se han visto mejoras significativas en nuestras aulas, áreas verdes y espacios de juego. ¡Periódicamente compartiré con todos un correo electrónico destacando estas mejoras para celebrar y reconocer el progreso! El primero estuvo dentro del presupuesto hace unos días. ¡Este segundo afecta a nuestros más pequeños: los niños de Prepa y sus maestros!

Hemos tomado un rincón del campus olvidado y esencialmente abandonado y lo revitalizamos y re conceptualizamos como el nuevo Prepa Playground. Lo suficientemente grande para que 60 estudiantes corran, se balanceen y trepen bajo nuestros hermosos árboles. Próximamente habrá un espacio adicional de juego de Prepa de menor energía encima de la caja de concreto donde hemos colocado una carpa para mesas de juego (pronto con bloques de madera y juegos), y en el piso de concreto donde se pintarán carteles de juego. Esto permitirá que todos nuestros niños de preparación jueguen con niveles de energía altos, medios y bajos en un patio de juegos compartido.

Más espacios al aire libre para jugar bajo el sol y la lluvia serán una parte distintiva de nuestro ciclo Prepa y la experiencia de aprendizaje Futuro Verde. Nuestra caminata diaria por el bosque de 30 minutos es una segunda parte nueva de nuestra estrategia de “más juego al aire libre”, una medida ampliamente validada por investigaciones sobre el aprendizaje y el desarrollo en niños pequeños. El nuevo Prepa Playground es un excelente ejemplo de cómo Futuro Verde avanzará en colaboración: los padres donaron la máquina de juego principal ($3500 usd), FV movió y arregló los viejos columpios y máquinas trepadoras, colocó grava y ahora carpa el espacio de concreto. ¡Pronto se pintará el piso de concreto con una variedad de juegos de piso elegidos por nuestro increíble equipo de maestros de Prepa!

¡A continuación se muestra dónde nos encontramos con nuestro hermoso y en desarrollo patio de recreo de PREPA! ¡Gracias a los padres por la donación/recaudación de fondos y al equipo de mantenimiento por los esfuerzos de construcción!

Carta #10: Formas de tratar los piojos | Letter #10: Ways to Treat Lice

Dear Parents and Professors,

In a rutinary spot check we counted 9 cases of lice/lice eggs in 5th grade and 3-4 in grades 1, 2 and 3rd grade. This is a normal and common occurrence in schools. It is unrelated to school or family hygiene.

We want to urge ALL parents to consider lice treatment (shampoo and or lice removal with lice comb) immediately.

We will monitor the situation and report back on Friday or early next week. Please note that active lice DO NOT represent a health risk to children – it’s a minor annoyance of our long evolutionary history in close kinship with insects!

However to eradicate it we must all work together simultaneously – with everyone treating their children at the same time. Let’s try to do this starting today and through the weekend. Several treatments are typically necessary. I myself will treat myself as I have had some interactions with 2nd graders!

Estimados padres,

En un control aleatorio rutinario contamos 9 casos de piojos/huevos de piojos en 5.º grado y 3-4 en 1.º, 2.º y 3.º grado. Esto es una ocurrencia normal y común en las escuelas. No significa nada respecto a higiene o limpieza en la escuela o en la casa.

Queremos instar a TODOS los padres a que consideren el tratamiento contra los piojos (champú o eliminación de piojos con peine para piojos) de inmediato y continuarlo en el fin de semana.

Monitoreamos la situación e informaremos el viernes o principios de la próxima semana. Tenga en cuenta que los piojos activos NO representan un riesgo para la salud de los niños: ¡es una molestia menor de nuestra larga historia evolutiva en estrecho parentesco con los insectos!

Sin embargo, para erradicarlo debemos trabajar todos juntos simultáneamente, y todos deben tratar a sus hijos al mismo tiempo. Intentemos hacer esto a partir de hoy y durante el fin de semana.
