Student learning: Bilingualism for all

Student learning: Bilingualism for all

bilingue_Claudia

In Futuro Verde we support all of our students on the road to bilingualism. Undeniably, learning one or two new languages is a challenging process. However, your children will feel supported and encouraged by both our teachers and language acquisition team.

We work in unison to monitor and follow up on both newcomers and students who have been with us for longer. We offer differentiated support based on age and language acquisition stage in both English and Spanish.

Available options include push-in and pull-out support by a language specialist, differentiated instruction, and individualized attention. Moreover, to our secondary students we offer the opportunity of “Language B” classes in recognition of the need for support during the language acquisition process. Language B classes aim at developing language through subject matter that differs from the grade level content for language. Bilingualism for all is unmistakably one of Futuro Verde´s goals.

2nd Annual International Conference on Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable Education

2nd Annual International Conference on Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable Education

There is still time to register for the 2nd Annual International Conference on Bilingual, Holistic, and Sustainable Education!

Why should you attend this conference? Because at this conference you will be able to choose from a number of presentations given by Futuro Verde teachers in which they share an aspect of their teaching that they feel is highly effective for their students, and in which they will invite your comments and ideas. You will not only learn more about the kind of quality education your child is receiving, but you will also get to know your child’s teacher and other FV teachers as professionals who are continually improving their practice by studying their teaching and sharing with and learning from their teaching colleagues. You will also have the opportunity to learn from outside educational experts and researchers. This year’s conference keynote speaker, Dr. Fred Genesee, is an internationally acclaimed expert on bilingual education. Come join us for two days of exciting and stimulating conversations and exchanges of ideas. The knowledge you gain and the contributions you make at the conference will help strengthen your child’s educational experience at Futuro Verde.

June: FEA and Science Fair

June: FEA and Science Fair

The month of June arrives full of activities and events at Futuro Verde!

The Student Arts Festival (FEA) begins. This year’s theme is “For a Culture of Peace, say No to Bullying”.  In Futuro Verde we believe in seeing the glass half full and having a positive outlook, so we’ll be focusing on a “Culture of Peace”. We will work this theme intensively in art classes, in Peace Practices and in other areas of student life. You can also help by encouraging and working on these themes at home.

There are many categories in which your child can participate. Categories that are strictly governed by the theme of this year and others more flexible and open where all can participate and parents can also help!

Categories with theme

  • Performing arts: storytelling, monologue, parade, choral poetry, street theatre, children’s theatre, indoor theatre, puppets.
  • Literary arts: story, illustrated story, photo-story, short story, poetry, oral rhymes.
  • Visual arts: performance, audiovisual production, set-up, mural, drawing, manga, sculpture, photography, engraving, painting.

Free categories

  • Performing arts: dance and choreographies, conceptual choreo, Costa Rican folkloric dances, folkloric international.
  • Musical arts: cimarrona, ensemble or records, instrumental ensemble with materials of everyday use, marimba, vocal soloist popular song.
  • Visual arts: masquerade, indigenous masks, mascarade, body painting, fashion design, live sculptures.

In June we also have the highly anticipated Science Fair! Students have been working on their projects for several months. Each child has chosen the topic that interests them, has done research on the topic, has developed their knowledge and understanding and has become an expert on their topic. This is a new way to learn, by which students do not learn by memorizing facts that a week later they‘ll forget, but instead by doing their own self-guided research, they engage at a deeper level and internalize their subject matter by developing independent learning skills..

Parents can help in this learning process by showing interest in their student’s project, talking to their child and asking questions about what they’re learning and by buying the necessary presentation board. And, obviously, it’s always nice for children to have the presence of their parents during the all-school Science Fair project share, which will be held this year on June 21st.

Professional development for prospective IB diploma teachers

Professional development for prospective IB diploma teachers

IB_staffmain

In preparation for submitting our request for authorization to the IB in October we are well underway with teacher professional development. A high class program with successful students comes from having well prepared teachers. Over the next few months teachers will be attending IB workshops in their specific subject areas. In addition, in-school professional development will focus on preparing teachers for these workshops as well as preparing them to write their proposed IB course outlines. Other exciting activities include a visit by our teachers to La Paz Community School in Guanacaste, a bilingual IB school.
